greenhouse construction

  1. We have a small hobby farm in the mountains of VA.We enjoy learning horticulture and food preservation. We built our 24'x40' greenhouse this summer. We covered it with polycarbonate and installed electricity. We have 2 exhaust fans,2 louvers and thermostats for each.We hung 40% Aluminet shade cloth.Installed 4 large used windows(my husband found at the dump). We built 5 raised growing beds. They are 18"x4'x8'.We mixed our growing medium of equal parts of top soil, sand, and old compost. We used heavy pond liner to line the beds with first, then gravel, hay, and then soil mix.We have 4 varieties of swiss chard,4 different leaf lettuce, radishes, spinach, carrots,Holland and Telegraph cucumbers,2 banana trees,3 fig trees, and alot of tomaotes!Bulbs like Paperwhites and our sons' cacti and succulant collection.Herbs, flowers, and bedding plants will be started in spring. We have a wood stove to yet install. So much to learn!I've ordered carnivorous plants and I'll make them a bog..moths won't stand a chance.
